To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the discovery of Queen Nefertiti’s Bust, the British Virgin Islands Government has approved the release of a unique coin which has been produced in the shape of this famous Bust.

Queen Nefertiti was the Great Royal Wife of the Egyptian Pharoah Akhenaten. She and her husband were known for a religious revolution in which they started to worship one God only, this was Aten or the Sun Disc. Nefertiti was given many titles including Hereditary Princess, Lady of Grace, Great King’s Wife and Mistress of Upper and Lower Egypt. Her name in hieroglyphs translates as Beauty of Aten, the Beautiful One has Come.

Nefertiti was made famous by her bust which is a 3300 year old painted limestone bust. The fact that this bust has become one of the most copied works of art of Ancient Egypt has made this Egyptian Queen one of the most famous women from the ancient world.

Believed to have been crafted in 1345 BC by Thutmose, who is thought to have been the Royal Sculptor of Pharaoh Akhenaten, the bust was discovered in 1912 by Ludwig Borchardt in Thutmose’s workshop in Amarna, Egypt. The face on the bust is completely symmetrical and the left eye has not been completed and is believed to have been used as an example of how to sculpt facial proportions.

Produced in 1oz Fine Silver, this amazing coin has been struck in the shape of this famous and historical find which in itself is a work of art. Each coin is struck four times to achieve the famous Pobjoy proof finish and the obverse features a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS which has been specially adapted to fit into this unique shape. The coin is presented in a beautiful triangular box.
